Towards Sustainable Growth

The global debate on sustainable growth and the social and ecological limits of growth has strengthened since the start of the current financial and economic crisis. Kalevi Sorsa Foundation started the project Towards Sustainable Growth in 2011 with the intention of bringing new ideas into this debate. 

In 2011 the project organized various seminars and coordinator Antti Alaja published a report on the ecological and social critique of the European degrowth movement.  The publication also introduces European debates about Green Keynesianism, immaterial knowledge economy, and decoupling of GDP growth and environmental degradation.

In 2012-2013 project will focus on popularizing some of the key ideas in the Post Keynesian tradition. Antti Alaja and Esa Suominen are writing a publication about the need for demand-side employment policies and wage-led growth model. 

 Secondly, a publication about the concept of virtuous circle in economic, social and now also in ecological development is in the works. The concept of virtuous circle and cumulative causation was originally formulated by the Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal in the 1930s. The idea is to rethink this concept in the current context, which is characterized by globalization, knowledge economy development and ecological crisis.
